Know where every pound goes.

Count fast. Waste less.

Just Saving Food is a kitchen accountability and live inventory app. Cooks scan what they take out, the count updates live, and everyone can see what moved, when, and who moved it.

Early access for restaurant owners, chefs and kitchen managers.

The problem

Food leaves storage all day. Almost none of it gets written down.

When the count comes up short, nobody knows if it was waste, portioning, a bad delivery, or something worse. The restaurant just eats the cost.

What goes wrong in a kitchen

  • Product comes out of the walk-in and never gets logged.
  • Counts are slow, done late at night on a clipboard, or skipped.
  • Ordering is guesswork when on-hand numbers are stale: over-order and it spoils, under-order and you 86 it.
  • Weighing is slow: tare the scale, remember the container weight, write it down.

Why it keeps happening

  • Logging feels like extra work, or like being watched, so cooks have no reason to care.
  • Managers can see the gap but not the cause.
  • Money is lost to waste and missing food the restaurant can't see, so it can't fix it.

JSF makes logging fast, makes the numbers visible live, and rewards the people doing it.

How it works for cooks

Take it out. Scan it. Done.

No extra paperwork. Logging a movement takes a few seconds, and every entry is tied to the cook and the time.

  1. Scan what you take out

Scan the barcode on packaged goods, or scan a container tag for bulk items. No barcode? Pick the item and enter cases, lbs, pans or each.

  2. Stock updates live

On-hand changes the moment you confirm, and the movement shows up on the live board for the whole kitchen.

  3. Earn points

Points land instantly. Toss something? Log the waste with a reason and you still earn points. Honest logging always pays.

In development Barcode scanning, the take-out flow, the live board and points are being built into the prototype now.

Live inventory board

Your walk-in, like a stock ticker.

Every item shows on-hand against target, a trend line, and a color: green, yellow, orange or red. A scrolling ticker shows each movement as it happens.

  • Romaine6 of 8 csNear target

Points and rewards

Give cooks a reason to log it right.

Accountability works better as teamwork than surveillance. Cooks earn points for accurate logging, and managers turn those points into rewards, like a free meal.

Cook pointsExample
250 pts · 4-shift streak
  • Scanned container: short rib+pts
  • Logged waste honestly: romaine+pts
  • Completed walk-in count+bonus

Sample values for illustration. Point values are set by each manager.

Log a take-outBase points for every logged movement.
Scan itSmall bonus. Scanning is more accurate than typing.
Log waste honestlyAlways earns points, so nobody hides waste.
Accurate countBonus when the count matches logged movements within the manager's tolerance.
Streaks and weekly boardBonus for complete logging shift after shift. The leaderboard resets weekly so new staff can compete.

Managers build the reward menu, set the point costs, and approve or deny requests. Fake activity gets flagged for review, and adjustments are visible.

In development

Smart container system

Scan. Weigh. Done. No tare.

Tagged, branded containers know their own empty weight. The cook never taps tare or does the math. One scan and one weigh is a complete, attributed log entry.

STEP 1

Scan the tag

The tag holds the container ID and its empty weight, saved once at setup.

STEP 2

Set it on the scale

The app reads the gross weight, or the cook types it in.

STEP 3

Net weight, automatic

The app subtracts the tare and records net food weight, the item, the cook and the time.

STEP 4

Everything updates

On-hand changes, the movement hits the live board, and points are awarded.

Gross on scale14.2 lb
−
Container tare1.7 lb

Net food12.5 lb
Example numbers

In development Manual weight entry works on any device. Connected scales depend on the device: USB scales in Chrome on desktop and Android, and Bluetooth scales in Chrome on Android and desktop. iPhone web apps can't reach Bluetooth scales, so iPhone uses typed weights until a native app. NFC tags and a smart shelf with built-in load cells are on the longer roadmap.

Manager autopilot

Open the app. Your list is already built.

The Today screen lines up what needs doing: areas to count, items to order, variances to recheck, and rewards waiting for approval. You review, tap, and move on.

  • Count the walk-inGuided, item by item
  • Order from Purveyor A3 items below target
  • Recheck chicken thighCount doesn't match movements
  • Approve a reward requestFree meal

“What are we low on?”  ·  “Order what we need for the weekend.”

  1. Guided count

The app walks you area by area, item by item. Enter or scan, skip or flag. A progress bar keeps you moving.

  2. One-tap orders

Items below target are grouped by purveyor, with suggested quantities in that supplier's own pack sizes. Tap once to draft a purchase order per supplier.

  3. You stay in control

The command box answers plain-language questions and drafts orders. Nothing is sent until you review and confirm.

In the prototype counting by storage area and purveyor-grouped reorder lists. In development Today screen, guided count and one-tap orders.

Variance and waste

See where to look. Not who to blame.

The variance report compares what the app expected on the shelf with what you counted, by item and by shift, in units and dollars. It points you at the gap so you can find the cause: waste, a delivery error, a portioning issue, or a missed log.

Variance report

Example data
ItemExpectedCountedGap
Chicken thigh48 lb42 lb−6 lb
Romaine6 cs6 cs0
Mozzarella10 cs11 cs+1 cs
  • Catch it sooner. Gaps show up at the next count, not at month-end.
  • Order closer to need. Live on-hand numbers mean fewer over-orders that spoil and fewer 86'd items.
  • Honest waste, in the open. Waste logged with a reason becomes something you can plan around.
  • Owner view. Inventory on hand, waste logged, variance trend, top movers, and a CSV export for the bookkeeper.

In the prototype waste log, dashboard and CSV export. In development variance report.
